音声の仕様は、以下の通り。DVDフォーマットとしては、考えられる限りのものを詰め込んだ感じである。Robert FrippとSteven Wilsonの後の作業にあったのは、Simon Heyworth、Joe Gilder、Neil Wilkesら。

予告されていたHigh Resolution Stereoというのが見当たらないが、PCM/MLP Losslessとの違いがよくわからない。とりあえず、24ビット48/96キロヘルツで聞けるので、問題ないが。
聞き慣れない音が飛び出したりもするけれど、オリジナルマルチトラックからのリミックスは従来盤と大きくかけ離れてはいないので、さほど違和感はない。"I Talk to the Wind"でギターソロにフルートがかぶっていたりとかの程度。
何よりも、マルチに戻って作業しているので、音のクリアーさや厚みが半端ではない。今までの「2004 Original Master Edition」の音質が薄く霞がかって聞こえて、ミックスの問題を超えて、後に戻れなくなる。まあ、曲間に転写があるので、元から好きではなかったが。
やはり、さすが24/96というか、MLP Losslessで聴くと、1969年とは思えない圧倒的で素晴らしい音質である。
一番驚いたのは、"The Court of the Crimson King"ラストでの低音の増強ぶり。最初にヘッドホンで聴いた時、ビリビリと振動した。スピーカーでも、かなり来ていて、パワーアンプが貧弱だと、グシャグシャになってしまいそう。高品位の再生環境が必要かもしれない。
"Epitaph"で高まってくるメロトロンの洪水も、シャープさを増して、5.1chでの包囲感は堪えられない。
DVD-Aは開発元さえ、もうすでにフォローしていない規格らしいが、もったいない。少なくとも、もっとも普及している平均的な家庭のプレーヤーでそのまま、ある程度は再生できるのだから。

Meridian Lossless Packing(MLP)は、Meridian Audio, Ltd.が開発した
PCMオーディオデータを圧縮するプロプライエタリな可逆圧縮技法。Packed
PCMとも呼ばれる。DVDオーディオでの可逆圧縮規格として使われている
(Advanced Resolution のロゴがあることが多い)。音楽では、約2:1の圧
縮となることが多い。DVDオーディオのプレーヤーにはMLPのデコーダが必ず
内蔵されているが、コンテンツでMLPによる圧縮を行うかどうかは制作者の

これは、DVD-Audio規格対応プレーヤーのみで再生が可能。通常のDVD(-Video)プレーヤーでは再生できない。単純化すると、普通のDVDプレーヤーは48kHzまでしか対応していないと考えればいい(本当はちょっと違うけれど)。
パイオニアのDV-610AV
国内盤の仕様はHMVの特集ページが詳しい。紙ジャケは日英加米の各国盤仕様となるようだが、30cmLPサイズの箱は邪魔になりそう。
国内盤ボックスセットは売り切れ盛況だが、延期に次ぐ延期。ついには、12月に突入の様子。国内ボックスを待っている方は、まだ当分時間がかかりそうなので、輸入盤
